Angling Trust Wessex Region, Boat Championship 2016

DSCF0141Saturday 13th August, we were fortunate with the weather which was set fair for this year’s annual Angling Trust Wessex Region Boat Championship, this year out of the port of Weymouth.
From 0700 Hrs the competitors registered at The Sailors Return pub where they could get a breakfast before strolling across the road for the boats, Al’s Spirit, Peace and Plenty (now Chris Tett has retired the boat is run by Jay Pullen), Sally Ann Joe and, over the bridge, for Top Cat.
With the 32 anglers on board the boat draw for fishing positions for the day took place, then after safety briefing, at 0800 hours, the boats headed out the harbour to start the day. As there were fresh Mackerel to be had the boats stopped to feather up enough for 2 or 3 per angler, other bait supplied was Ragworm and Squid.
Each of the skippers had their plan for the day to give the anglers the chance to catch a variety of species to build their score in this catch and release competition. Species caught were in reasonable numbers, Mackerel, Pout, Ballan Wrasse and Scad. Caught in smaller numbers were Bream, Dogfish, Bull Huss, Conger, Cuckoo Wrasse, Rays, Gurnard and Smoothound.
On return to shore it was to the Weymouth Angling Society Club premises where the anglers could have a drink and a hotdog while the results were worked out. As usual the top anglers had already worked out were they stood. Despite the boats fishing different ground and catching different species the winners were decided by 100% for a boat win with count back on score for overall position. The top 3 boat winners were only separated by 6 points, with 1 point between first and second, so 1 fish separating top 3.
Kim Bowden opened the presentation of awards by thanking the boat skippers for their efforts and tea through the day. Thanks to the Sailors Return for allowing us to use them for registration in the morning and to Weymouth Angling Society for the use of their club house for our presentation and supplying a bite to eat. Finally thanks to Andy Selby of Weymouth Angling Centre for supplying the bait and putting it on the boats in the morning, also for liaising with the skippers and organising the boats.
Ray Ashby then asked the anglers to show their appreciation to Kim Bowden for organising the event.
First the raffle was held, the main event for us on a lower score! Top skipper was worked out by average score on each boat and Jamie Pullen of Peace and Plenty was top with average angler score of 141.25 points, Andy Selby of Weymouth Angling Centre presented a plaque to Jamie. At registration people entered a pool to be paid to person with most species. This year it was just 1 person that had 11 different species and that was Richard Ferre who received the envelope with all cash collected for entry to pool that morning.
It was then time for the presentation for the 2016 Wessex Boat Championship. Kim Bowden read out the results while Wessex President Ray Ashby did the presentation of awards. 1st, Perry Dack 189 points who won top prize of £200, 2nd Andy Selby, 188 points, 3rd Ray Barron 183, in 4th place the other boat winner being Colin Searles with 151 points. All other boat winners were awarded £60. From 5th place to 15th each angler was free to choose their prize from the table.
Trophies were awarded to top members and top Club Champions. This year top AT Member was Perry Dack with Andy Selby runner up. Champion of Champion from clubs was Ray Barron of Individual Boat Angling Club and runner up Colin Searles of Hamble Angling Club.
Full results will be on the web site at
Kim Bowden closed the event by thanking the anglers for entering the Angling Trust Wessex Region Boat Championship 2016 and making it the success it has been, even if you did not catch enough to get into the prizes. He hoped you enjoyed the day and hopes to see you next year. Venue and date for 2017 yet to be arranged but looking to Langstone in late June.
